New multimillion India-UK research centres

The UK Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Government of India Department for Biotechnology (DBT), have decided to collaborate  to fund three major global research centres on three major diseases.

The first is to tackle the problem of Tuberculosis for which a partnership between the University of Cambridge and the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT) in Chennai, India, has been formed.Researchers from various disciplines will be looking to generate data on drug resistant TB.

The second partnership between the University of Sheffield, University of Bradford and L V Prasad Eye Institute in India, will look at the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the country. The main areas of focus here would be the target delivery of medicines for eye infections and other infectious diseases.

The third partnership between the University of Cambridge with the National Centre for Biological Sciences in India will look at increasing research on cancer biology and therapy in India. The focus here will be to increase transnational research on the disease and to build capacities on the disease in the country.

For the purposes listed above, nearly £3.5million will be invested by the UK, through the MRC and the Newton Fund, with matched funding provided by DBT. To read more please click here.
