Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi has become home to two alternative medicine centres, specialising in the fields of siddha and unani.

Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), inaugurated the Unani Medical Centre and the Siddha Clinical Research Unit yesterday, following their establishments by the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) and Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS). The Unani Medical Centre is the third facility of its kind in Delhi, already home to unani facilities at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

“The Government of India is taking special care of the people through AYUSH systems of medicine,” Naik said at the launch. In a tweet, he added that the centres “will provide holistic healthcare through [Unani and Siddha] systems to the patients visiting Safdarjung Hospital from different parts of the country.”

The inauguration was welcomed by Dr Sunil Gupta, medical superintendent at Safdarjung Hospital, who praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for spreading awareness and gaining acceptance of AYUSH systems of medicine at the international level. Examples of this include Modi’s successful push for United Nations recognition of an International Day of Yoga and his promotion of AYUSH at various global forums, including at this year’s G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan.

AYUSH systems are being promoted heavily at home as well, with the recent announcement of 12,500 wellness centres providing AYUSH-based treatments by the Prime Minister a key example of this. 4,000 of the 12,500 centres will be opened this year. Naik had called for the establishment of 12,500 such centres earlier this year, whilst AYUSH practitioners are calling for expansion even further; Dr V. B. Vijaykumar, vice-president of AYUSH body the Council of Indian Medicine, has called for AYUSH centres in every state.
