India is on track to overtake the United States as the country worst-affected in the world by cases of COVID-19 – the disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or, simply, coronavirus.

At the time of writing, India has confirmed more than five million cases of COVID-19 according to Worldometer data. To date, SARS-CoV-2 infections number at 5,491,410 of which 1,007,078 are active. 87,933 people have sadly lost their lives to COVID-19, whilst 4,396,399 have fortunately recovered. A number of high-profile political figures have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, among them Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah and former President Pranab Mukherjee – the latter of whom passed away.

India surpassed Brazil in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases thus far in recent weeks. It may well overtake the United States as, on Sunday, the preceding 24 hours saw 92,605 new cases of COVID-19 reported. On Monday, it was reported that, in the last 24 hours 86,961 new cases were reported according to data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The surge indicates that India may well become the country worst-affected by the global pandemic in a matter of weeks. There is some silver lining, however. The country’s number of recoveries is the highest in the world at approximately eighty percent according to the U. S.’s Johns Hopkins University. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan touted the news on Twitter.

Nonetheless, India still ranks second in the world in the number of active cases – again behind only the United States. The two countries are, at the time of writing, the only nations to record an active case count above one million. India is third in the world in the number of deaths, behind the United States and Brazil.

The Union Government’s response to the pandemic has emphasised testing, As of September 17th, more than 61 million samples were tested for the novel coronavirus in the country according to Statista

At the global level, there have been 31,274,861 cases of COVID-19 of which 7,457,526 are active according to Worldometer. The overwhelming majority of active COVID-19 cases – 99 percent – denote 7,396,287 people infected with the virus who are in mild condition. The remaining one percent denotes 61,239 people in serious or critical condition. 22,851,700 people have recovered from the virus. Tragically, 965,635 people have lost their lives.
